RIVERBANKS ZOO AND GARDEN
Riverbanks Zoo and Garden has more than 2,000 animals and beautiful botanical gardens. The gates to the public opened on April 25, 1974. Today it is one of the largest mid-sized zoos in the United States and South Carolina’s leading destination attraction. The zoo draws one million visitors annually (Riverbanks Zoo). Alan Shoemaker worked at the zoo for 30 consecutive years. He did a lot with the American Zoo Association and their committees and he understands the permit process for dealing with endangered species. Shoemaker imported and exported many captive bred wildlife. With his job he has traveled to all 50 states and 47 countries.

Shoemaker has always been interested in dinosaurs. He took advanced paleontology at the University of South Carolina, where he attended graduate school. He attends yearly paleontology conferences. He volunteers to help out with the work around the museum and teaches classes.
