Alan Shoemaker served in the Vietnam War as a Platoon Leader. He received a Bronze Star, an Army Commendation Medal, and a Meritorious Unit Citation during his service. After his time in the service, he got a Master’s in Biology. Alan worked for the Riverbanks Zoo for 30 years as a curator of mammals and later as a collection manager. Alan talks about his time as a Platoon leader and how he became involved with the army. In Alan’s interview, he talks about his time before, during, and after being in the army.
